Sunset and stars on the salt flat

There are three ways to see sunset on the flat. The first is the day tour, which ends with photo time and sunset before the return to Uyuni. The second is a separate evening trip from Uyuni. The third is a multi-day programme with sunset and stars in its title. They are different products, so check what each one lists.

A sunset is part of many day tours, but stargazing is not. One day tour describes waiting for the sunset before the drive back, and nothing in it promises a later night sky. If stars matter to you, look for an offer that lists them.

No single price, pickup time or minimum group size covers these products, so check the details for your date. For most visitors who want sunset only, the day tour already includes it. For most who also want the night sky, an evening trip or a programme that lists stars is the better fit. See the tour comparison for day tours.

What the stars depend on

A clear night is not guaranteed on any date. Clouds can hide the sky in the rainy season, and a reflection needs smooth surface water, so a mirror view does not follow automatically from rain either. A sunset on a wet flat can look very different from one on dry crust.

Whether you see the Milky Way depends on a dark, clear sky. This page does not name months or sunset times, because the sky decides, not the calendar. Ask your operator what happens to the trip if the weather closes in.

Also ask where the trip stops for sunset and whether you can stay after dark. On the flat there is no shelter and no light, so you depend on the vehicle and the guide. Bring a headlamp or phone light for getting in and out of the jeep, and keep your warm layers within reach.

Season, cold and what to wear

The evening is the coldest part of the day.

Dry season

The dry season usually runs from April to November. The crust is firm, and the flat shows its salt patterns. Nights are cold. Average lows at Uyuni airport are around minus 10 to 12 ยฐC in June and July.

Rainy season

The rainy season usually runs from December to March. Water on the flat can mirror clouds and the sky at sunset, but the island visit can drop out. Average lows are 4 to 5 ยฐC in January and February. See the mirror effect.

Clothing

Wear warm layers, a windproof jacket, a hat and gloves. Waterproof boots matter on a wet flat. Sun protection is still needed before sunset. See what to pack.

Altitude

The flat lies at about 3,600 m. Take it easy on the first day, avoid alcohol and talk to a doctor before the trip. See altitude.

Uyuni sunset and stars: frequently asked questions

Is sunset included in the day tour?

Many day tours end with photo time and sunset before the drive back to Uyuni. One offer includes a snack at sunset. Check the end time of the tour you book.

Can I see the stars on the day tour?

Not by default. A day tour that waits for sunset does not promise a night sky afterwards. Look for an evening trip or a programme that lists stars.

How long is the evening trip?

A separate evening trip from Uyuni takes about 5 hours, with hotel pickup in town. Pickup times and prices depend on the offer and the date.

Will the salt flat mirror the sunset?

Only when there is a thin, smooth layer of water, which usually means the rainy season. It is not guaranteed on any day. See the mirror effect and the best time to visit.

How cold does it get at night?

Average lows at the airport are around minus 10 to 12 ยฐC in June and July and about 4 to 5 ยฐC in January and February. Wear warm layers whenever you go.
